Historical Museums
Wayne County history is marked by events that shaped life here and across the nation. Among it's first settlers were Quakers John Smith and Jeremiah Cox, who left the South because they opposed slavery, and in 1806 founded Richmond, the county seat. Westward expansion along the National Road brought pioneers through Wayne County. They stopped at welcoming places like the Huddleston Farmhouse in Cambridge City. Trading posts and other stopping points on the National Road grew quickly into towns. Before the Civil War, slaves traveling along the legendary Underground Railroad, stayed at the Levi Coffin House in Fountain City. Many of these historic houses are now museums that educate visitors about the early life in Wayne County and its rich history.
More recently, recorded jazz was born at the Gannett Studio near the Starr Piano factory in the Whitewater Gorge. The first movie projector was invented and early television was produced in Wayne County where football greats are immortalized at Richmond' Indiana Football Hall of Fame.
