There are five school districts throughout Wayne County.  The Richmond Community School District is the largest school district with a total of sixteen schools and 7,000 students.  The four other school districts are located in Fountain City, Centerville, Cambridge City and Hagerstown.

Centerville-Abington Community School Corporation

Centerville-Abington Community School Corporation includes one high school, one middle school and two elementary schools.  The school corporation is large enough to offer a wide range of educational programs and yet small enough to assure that individual student needs are addressed.  Technology expenditures have exceeded $1,500,000 over the past five years.   The ongoing development of the EXCEL Program for academically talented students in grades 3 through 12 is fully implemented.  Both elementary schools are participating in CLASS and Blocks Balanced Reading training through the Indiana Department of Education.  Early intervention for School Success and the Reading Recovery Program and Literacy Groups focus readiness so each student may realize his or her full potential.  A full range of special service programs is offered for those students identified as academically handicapped and/or attention deficit.  Advanced placement classes, a grade 9-12 Tech Prep curriculum, and an outstanding vocational program are designed to prepare the student to compete in the marketplace of our global society.

Physical facilities include an outdoor all-weather track, tennis courts, football field, baseball diamond, soccer field, and supporting practice areas, an indoor swimming pool, and three gymnasiums, three multi-purpose rooms, and a weight room at Centerville High School.

Nettle Creek School Corporation

The Nettle Creek School Corporation serves 1,250 students in one elementary school and one junior/senior high school.  Classroom teachers, 70% of whom hold master’s degrees, enjoy the support of three full-time guidance counselors, a nurse, two full-time librarians, resource teachers in art, music and physical education as well as resource teachers for students with special needs.  In addition a full-time Student Services Coordinator serves both schools as a liaison between the school corporation and the home. 

The Nettle Creek School Corporation offers a variety of learning experiences through its Reading Recovery Program (three full time teachers), Literacy Groups, gifted and talented programming, honors classes, vocational programs, and academic offerings.  High school students are also offered classes via the IHETS network.  Graduating seniors of Hagerstown Junior Senior High School have the opportunity to apply for and receive scholarships from the Jayne L. Miller Scholarship Trust.  Twenty-four, $2,000 scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors in the Class of 2000.  The schools also provide a wide range of co-curricular and athletic opportunities for students.

Northeastern Wayne Schools

The Northeastern Wayne School Corporation is located in the northeastern sector of Wayne County and is an agricultural area comprised of five small communities with a number of small businesses, but no industry.  Northeastern Wayne Schools has a student enrollment of 1,200 students in grades K-12 and includes one junior/senior high school and one elementary school.   Northeastern Elementary offers a variety of classroom structures.  There are two multi-level classrooms (second/third and fourth/fifth) and two looping classrooms (first to second) with approximately 100 students enrolled.  The sixth grade departmentalizes in the four basic subject areas.  The school provides music, art, computer, physical education and media to students in K-6 grade.  Three Reading Recovery teachers address the needs of the lowest achieving first graders. 

The high school academic and vocational needs are met through a variety of means:  a traditional comprehensive curriculum; English and U.S. History advanced placement classes; distance learning opportunities; I.C.E. (a mentoring/work program); cosmetology training at Demuth Institute of Cosmetology; training at Ivy Tech State College for certified nursing assistants and medical records; vocational training through Richmond Vocational School.  A gifted/talented program is provided for qualified students through twelfth grade.  Numerous extracurricular activities such as athletics, clubs and theater are available throughout the year to interested students.

Richmond Community Schools

Richmond Community Schools include one high school that includes a vocational school, two middle schools, and 10 elementary schools.  RHS is a four-year comprehensive secondary school with approximately 1,700 students with extensive program offerings including foreign languages, tech prep, and video training.  The city’s 10 elementary schools offer unique student opportunities through programs such as multi-age classes, Reading Recovery assistance integrated curriculums, literature based reading, art instruction and coordinated technology use.  Special programs are provided for all students with special needs.  Gifted and talented students at the middle school level may enroll in the Logos Lab, a charter-type program served by specially trained teachers in the arts, language, math and technology.  Students at the elementary level receive these services one day a week.  At the high school, services are provided within the school.  The Discovery Program serves the area as a unique alternative to the regular school setting.  The goal of this program is to create a community of learners who advance through elementary and middle school grade levels with the same teachers in the same location.

Western Wayne Schools

The Western Wayne School district serves approximately 1,200 students through three schools, Western Wayne Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School and Lincoln High School.  K-5 students attend a new elementary school that provides programs for early readiness such as Reading Recovery and Literacy Groups, and extended programs through a networked computer lab with Internet access in each classroom.  The middle school, grades 6-8, embraces the national middle school philosophy of providing a basic hands-on education, teaching teams, advisement, and exploratory learning opportunities.  The high school provides a comprehensive approach to education with academic, CORE 40, and vocational curriculum.  A newly instituted career plan provides each 9-12 student a focus for their academic preparation

Bethany Theological Seminary

Earlham College

Earlham CollegeFounded by the Quakers in 1847, Earlham College is a distinguished liberal arts college of 1,080 students from 47 states and 28 foreign countries.  It is rated among the top 30 national liberal arts colleges in the nation with programs of particular renown in the sciences, humanities, international study, and peace studies.

The campus includes academic buildings and student residence halls and houses, Lilly Library, Wildman Science Library, Wilkinson Theater, Goddard Auditorium, Runyan Center, Joseph Moore Museum of Natural History, Norwich Lodge conference and guest center, The Landrum Bolling Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Social Sciences (complete August 2002), and the Suzanne Horner Jackson Equestrian Center.  Athletic facilities include the recently completed Athletics and Wellness Center, M.O. Ross Football Field and other playing fields for soccer and field hockey.

The college has one of three U.S. based Japan information centers and also offers programs and consulting services for companies seeking to establish business contacts in Japan and the Pacific Rim.  The college is located on National Road West in Richmond.  765-983-1200.

Earlham School of Religion

Established in 1963, the Earlham School of Religion is a seminary affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).  Master of Arts and Master of Divinity degrees are offered to over 60 students.  The school is located at 228 College Avenue in Richmond.  765-983-1423

Indiana University East

Degrees offered include 25 bachelor’s and associates degrees and eight certificate programs in natural, social and behavioral sciences, arts and humanities, business, technical and professional fields.

IU East is proud of its strong technological infrastructure (including facilities for receiving and sending electronically delivered course work, fully-equipped computer labs, television channel for campus information, and WCTV, Richmond area public access television, nature and hiking trails, tennis courts, Graf Recreation Center and Child Development Center.

The campus is one of eight campuses of Indiana University and has an enrollment of about 2,500 locally; Purdue Programs enroll about 150. The campus is located at 2325 Chester Boulevard in Richmond. 765-973-8200.

Purdue University College of Technology

Purdue University offers complete degree programs in Richmond. They include bachelor of science degrees in Industrial Technology and in Organizational Leadership and Supervision; associate of science degrees in Computer Graphics Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology and Organizational Leadership and Supervision; as well as certificates in Industrial Technology (specializations in Work Design, Industrial Distribution and Warehouse Management, or Maintenance Management) and Organizational Leadership.

Purdue uses innovative course delivery, including accelerated 4-Saturday, evening, and online classes. Certificate and associate degree credits can be applied toward bachelor degrees. Community college credits (for example, Ivy Tech and Sinclair Community Colleges) can be applied toward bachelor of science degree programs (contact Purdue for details). In-state tuition is available for residents of several nearby Ohio counties.

Purdue University is engaged with business and industry in numerous ways. The College of Technology can deliver tailored training or credit coursework at business sites. The University's expertise is available through local faculty and students, as well as through its Technical Assistance Program (TAP). TAP provides technical and organizational help (gratis and contracted), as well as placement of summer interns. Partnered research projects can also be coordinated through the local College of Technology office.

Purdue University College of Technology degrees have been offered in Richmond for forty years, with current enrollment about 150. Purdue administers these academic programs from Middlefork Hall, on the campus of and in partnership with, Indiana University East, at 2325 Chester Boulevard in Richmond. 765-973-8228.

Ivy Tech COMMUNITY College

Ivy Tech is a statewide, open-access, community college which provides residents of Indiana with professional, technical, transfer, and lifelong education for successful careers, personal development, and citizenship. Through its affordable, quality educational programs and services, the College strengthens Indiana's economy and enhances its cultural development.

Ivy Tech Community College’s main campus in east central Indiana is located at 2357 Chester Boulevard, in Richmond, Indiana.  Johnson Hall, the College’s newest facility, was dedicated in April 2006 and offers state of the art technology and lab facilities.  McDaniel Hall, slated for opening in January 2007 will house new manufacturing, automotive, construction and technology labs and classrooms as well as the Workforce and Economic Development offices serving the training needs of regional business and industry.  Ivy Tech also operates an Instructional and Technology Center in Connersville, Indiana (http://www.ivytech.edu/connersville ) – hosting credit and non-credit training and course activities for Connersville and surrounding communities.  

Programs available at Ivy Tech Richmond include degree opportunities in Business, General Education, Health Sciences, Public Services and Technology.  Associate and Associate of Science Degrees, as well as Career Development Certificates and Technical Certificates allow students to build career pathways.  Distance education opportunities increase access to educational options with many courses and some programs being available online or in hybrid form.  In addition, short term programs and training services are available on demand to provide immediateskills and industry related certification opportunities.
