Agriculture Economic Development Initiative
The Indiana State Department of Agriculture has begun an Agriculture Economic Development Initiative to assist East Central Indiana communities. The Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County is coordinating the local initiative.
Agriculture will be a significant component of Indiana’s economic comeback. This sector needs to be considered within the broader context of economic development. In order to help do this, ISDA has defined a process by which individual counties will have the assistance of an ISDA consulting team to identify priorities for agriculture, develop action steps to achieve those goals and integrate these plans into economic development.
A regional action team has been convened and they are developing an action plan for the region. Wayne County is putting together a group to do some county-level strategic thinking about what they see as the most significant opportunities to strengthen the local agricultural economy.
The end result will be an action plan focused on two or three specific things we think would help agriculture in Wayne County. ISDA will then help direct us toward resources (funds, technical assistance, etc.) to implement our action plan.
Working with the EDC are Ivy Tech Community College, the Agribusiness Committee of the Richmond-Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, Wayne County government and the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service.
Information about the process is available from the ISDA Web site, http://www.in.gov/isda/aedi/index.html. For more information, contact Bob Hansen, business retention and expansion manager at the EDC, (765) 983-4769 or bhansen@edcwc.com.
